On the other hand, stability refers to the strength and control we develop in our muscles and provides the necessary support for our joints. Both flexibility and stability are equally important, and finding the right balance between them is crucial. Finding balance in yoga can be compared to balancing a scale. If we have too much flexibility without stability, we may risk overstretching our muscles and straining our joints. Similarly, if we have too much stability without flexibility, we may limit our range of motion and hinder our ability to properly perform poses. To achieve the ideal balance, we need to understand the relationship between flexibility and stability. Flexibility alone can create vulnerability in our bodies, especially if we lack the necessary strength to support our joints. However, without stability, we may collapse into the pose, relying solely on our flexibility, which can lead to instability. Balancing poses, such as Tree Pose or Warrior III, showcase the need for both flexibility and stability. These poses challenge our balance, and the strength required to maintain them comes from stability in the core and legs. However, flexibility in the standing leg is crucial to find the proper alignment and to allow the body to find its balance. To find this balance in our practice, it is essential to incorporate a variety of poses that work on both flexibility and stability. A yoga practice that solely focuses on stretching and flexibility may neglect the necessary stability work, resulting in muscle imbalances and potential injuries. Similarly, practicing only strength-based poses without incorporating flexibility can lead to limited range of motion and hinder progress. Engaging in a well-rounded yoga practice that incorporates both flexibility and stability not only benefits our physical body but also carries over to our mental and emotional well-being. The balance we find on the mat can translate into our daily lives. By developing flexibility, we learn to be open to change and adapt to new situations.
